Last week I shared a project that turned out to be one of my recent favorites – every time I walk past it in my studio, I have to stop and pick it up and look at how pretty the Gilded Leafing Embellishment turned out.
A zillion years ago (see the post from 2009), I created a project with this technique using a different set of supplies – embossing powder and a heat tool, rather than the new Gilded Leafing. The difference now (I talk about this in the video) is that there’s no heat necessary for this technique, plus the gold finish comes out brilliantly – much like the gilding on amazing Renaissance art.
If you’re interested, you can learn about the history of gold leaf in this 1915 pamphlet from the Smithsonian Institute Libraries (available to page through online). Fortunately there are no 20 pound hammers required to add gold leaf to your cards these days – ha!
Instead, the steps are fairly simple.
How to Use Gilded Leafing for the Gilded Mosaic Background Technique
Step 1, gather strips of selected coordinating Designer Series Papers and an Adhesive Sheet cut to around your desired size. Peel the front protective layer from the adhesive sheet.
Step 2, cut strips into triangles and begin at one point. Add triangles around your mosaic, filling in all available space but leaving room for the gold leaf to show between pieces of DSP.
Step 3, gently tap some of the Gilded Leafing Embellishment onto your mosaic. Use a Blending Brush to gently press leafing into the adhesive. When all adhesive is covered, use brush in circles to further burnish gilding and remove stray gilding from DSP areas.
