A Big Shot Christmas: Quilted Book Covers

Are you looking for Christmas gift ideas to make? Do you want to use your Big Shot die cut machine?

Then this Book Cover is a great project! You can customize to any fabric or book size (here I used the gorgeous Deck the Halls Designer Fabric from Stampin’ Up!).

This book cover happens to be a Bible cover that I made for a friend’s birthday.  She has just started taking CCD classes and I sent her a copy of the Life Application Study Bible (love it).  But I thought her Bible needed a quilted book cover :-)

Here are the steps for the quilted cover itself.  To see how to assemble the Scallop Square pieces, check out my quilted purse lesson.  Each Scallop Square piece is layered:

  • piece of the quilting fabric
  • then a piece of natural cotton batting
  • then the top piece of fabric

Here are the basic steps:

  1. I assembled quilted squares until the fabric was large enough to cover the open Bible.
  2. I laid the Bible on top and folded the ends in, then closed the book to make sure the cover would fit when the spine is closed.
  3. Finally, I stitched the ends to make a pocket for the front and back cover.
  4. Lastly, I embellished with a Scallop Circle flower cut from the Scallop Circle #2 Die.

For the Scallop Circle flower, the end result is impressive, but the steps are easy!

  1. Cut 4 of the larger Scallop Circles and one smaller for the center
  2. Fold each larger circle in half (wrong sides together) and begin to weave them.  I find it easiest to tack them quickly with a little bit of Glue Stick so they don’t unfold while I’m weaving.
  3. Add 4 circles together so the last circle is under the previous but on top of the first… makes sense in the picture.
  4. Tack together with needle and thread, then add smaller Scallop Circle to center.

These turn out really well, especially with a bit of matching Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding Tape and Victoria Crochet Trim held on with a Antique Brad.  Nifty!  I added this final flower embellishment to the front of my book cover (yes, needle and thread).

Put Down the Diet Coke and No One Gets Hurt

That’s right, put down the can and we can all go home happy… oh, wait. It’s already empty? I guess we are all okay then, because I need that can for a Big Shot project!

Did you realize that you can put MANY materials through your Big Shot Die Cut Machine? And yes, one of those materials is thin-gauge aluminum, just like on a soda can.

The snowflake on this project was cut with the Big Shot and the Snowflake #2 Die by my friend and LovenStampfuls Demonstrator, Shirley Casey.  Shirley made this project last year for a LovenStampfuls demonstrator swap — and it’s definitely a “WOW!”

Here’s a nice close-up shot of the snowflake.  And no, the edges aren’t sharp.  The Whisper White card stock snowflake on top is punched with the Snowflake Punch.

This is an easy project — just use Craft & Rubber Scissors (or tin snips) to cut the ends from a soda can.  Flatten the aluminum and cut it with the die of your choice.

The silver CD tin is convenient for adding gift cards, greeting cards or whatever else will fit in a tin for the holidays.  And yes, you can order these Small Tins on the Clearance Rack from my Online Ordering Website (while supplies last).

By the way, if you missed it last week, you’ll want to check out my “Card in a Tin” project!

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a LovenStampfuls demonstrator, you can check my website for details (and a REALLY fabulous Starter Kit special!)

Stamping with Chocolate: Candy Ornaments

Because stamping is fun, but stamping with chocolate is better…

This quick holiday treat takes very little material and very little time to create because the Stampin’ Up! punches are the perfect complement to the images in the Tags Til Christmas stamp set.  Plus the Tags Til Christmas bundle is part of the ABCs of Handmade Holidays special going on right now!

These little ornaments are simple:

  1. Stamp the ornament image from Tags Til Christmas in Cherry Cobbler ink and punch using the Ornament Punch.
  2. Punch a set of matching ornaments from the Jolly Holiday Designer Series Paper (part of the Contempo Christmas ABC Bundle!)
  3. Attach one stamped ornament and one Designer Paper ornament to the front and back of each wrapped peppermint patty
  4. Slide all 3 ornaments into a Medium Cello Bag and tie with a length of Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding Tape
  5. Ink the pine bough image from the Tags Til Christmas stamp set with Always Artichoke and Early Espresso Stampin’ Write Markers, then punch with the matching Decorative Label Punch
  6. Layer with a Designer Series Paper punched decorative label piece and attach to cello bag with a Stampin’ Dimensional

Voila! Here come the holidays!

A Howlin’ Halloween for Pets & Kids

Wow, Halloween is nearly here!!  I don’t know about you, but we are very much looking forward to Halloween at our house.  Since the kids start talking about their costume possibilities around June 3rd, we have a lot of lead-up time.

This Thursday we have a fun event here in Mahomet, Illinois: the Howlin’ Halloween Trick or Treat Party for Kids & Pets!  You can bring your kids & pets to this fun evening (5 to 7 pm) and let them wander around the booths for craft projects & treats.  Probably the craft projects are more for the kids, but you never know ;-)

I’ll be there with my Stampin’ Up! booth, and I hope to see you!  Here are the dog treats I’m working on:  (These Milkbones are huge! Small dog owners can break them up, right?)

I used the Two Tags die for the Big Shot (did you see me use it yesterday, too?) and punched a piece of Pumpkin Pie card stock.  The stamp set is Wicked Cool.  These are so simple!  Just diecut, stamp, punch, add a ribbon and you’re set!

Here are the masses of doggie treats in production.

Hope to see you on Thursday afternoon — be sure to bring a donation for Mahomet Helping Hands or something for one of the local animal charities!

***BLOG CANDY ALERT!!*** Do you have a doggie at home that could use a Howlin’ Halloween Treat?  Leave me a Halloween comment on this post about your pooch and I’ll do a virtual drawing on November 1st and send the winner a Wicked Cool dog treat.

For That Guy With Everything: Stampin’ Gift Ideas

Here is a project idea for holiday projects that will be well-loved and well-used.  Try turning your card-making and scrapbooking supplies into a special bookmark!

For more holiday project ideas:  Have you signed up for my Holiday Helper yet?  If not, click here to head over and get on my special email list!

This bookmark uses the Deck the Halls Designer Series Paper (part of an ABCs of Handmade Holidays bundle — did you see my card last week?) along with the Two Tags Die for the Big Shot.

I also added some of the Glass Glitter in Champagne–it’s the perfect color to complement the Deck the Halls DSP.  The Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding Tape makes the tail of the bookmark (the part that goes between the pages) and finishes off the project.

If you don’t recognize the stamp set, the “journey” definition is from the Define Your Life stamp set–one of my favs for pretty much any heartfelt occasion or gift project.

**Did you know that Define Your Life is one of the stamp set brushes included with My Digital Studio?  MDS would be another great holiday idea for yourself or a loved one!

Remember, I’m happy to help with shopping for Wish Lists with Stampin’ Up! Either give my contact information to your family or send me your Wish List directly along with contact information for your family or friends and let them know that I’ll be calling or emailing to help make their holiday shopping easy!

Painted Tile Project: Holiday Gift Idea

Have you begun to despair over what to purchase for the special people on your Christmas list? Are you wondering what you will find for the person who already has 10 Santa-themed dish towels and matching aprons?

Guess what–you can MAKE that person a Santa-themed set of Ceramic Tile Coasters with the Jolly Old Saint Nick stamp set, to match her holiday kitchen-ware!

Okay, maybe not Santas, but you never know–maybe some nice flowers, like this tile with the Awash With Flowers stamp set:

Making these tiles is an easy project with Staz-On ink and Stampin’ Up! Craft Pad Reinkers.  Here are the directions for Ceramic Tile Coasters:

  1. Stamp in Staz-On Jet Black
  2. Make a small palette of ink using the back of an old CD and add dots of Craft Reinkers in colors from the Brights Palette
  3. Use an Aqua Painter with the ink palette to watercolor your tumbled marble tile (don’t squeeze so that only a little water comes through)
  4. When finished, stamp a monogram in Staz-On ink with the Broadsheet Alphabet or another stamp set
  5. Spray coat with clear acrylic spray (from the hardware store), using 3-4 very light coats, allowing a few minutes to dry between each coat
  6. Use the Big Shot to cut a medium scallop circle from black felt, adhere to tile bottom with Crystal Effects

There are all kinds of fun tiles you can dream up.  Here is a sample with the Home for Christmas stamp set that I made last year.  A set of 4 tiles wrapped up in a pretty coordinating ribbon (gotta love those coordinating Stampin’ Up! products!) makes a beautiful gift for the holidays or any house-warming or hostess gift.

I even did a set of tiles with the Season of Friendship stamp set–you can check those out here.

Who Needs Icing When You Can Have BLING?

Really, what do little girls want? Yup, glitter and rhinestones.  So with this birthday card, the idea was to include both shine and glitz.

The card is created to hang from the handles of a gift bag, because little girls also don’t want to have to open envelopes.  Honestly, they’d rather skip the card altogether and just open the present.  But at least if the card is shiny, they might look twice, right?

Let me tell you a little bit more about this card.  If you look at the cupcake image on the card, you’ll see that there are no words on it… while there are definitely words on the stamp.

**STAMPING TIP** When mounting this fabulous Simple Birthday Thanks cupcake stamp, you can use a great trick to make it even more flexible.  Just use sharp scissors or a hobby blade to trim the words out from the cupcake.  Mount them on a spare wood block or on the back of the cupcake wood block. That way you can decide whether or not you want to use them.  Plus the words make a great stamp all their own, for kids to use on notes following Christmas, etc. when you might not need a cupcake.
