Because I Care: Watercolor Paper Technique

I’ve found myself using this Because I Care stamp set quite a bit lately (see some recent projects). I pulled it out once again to use at my Latest & Greatest Idea Blitz on Saturday, and everyone got to make this card with the new Marina Mist and Pacific Point colors.

For the hydrangea watercolor technique, we used the Stampin’ Up! Watercolor Paper.  The paper has a really nice rag feel that absorbs water and holds onto the colors for a really nice effect.

The two hydrangeas here are two different techniques.

For the one on the right, we spritzed the Watercolor Paper with water 1-2 times.  Then we used the Marina Mist Stampin’ Write Marker to color on the flower part of the stamp and the Wild Wasabi Marker to cover the stem, then stamped on the damp Watercolor Paper.

For the sample on the left, we spritzed the Watercolor Paper 3-4 times to get a really damp paper.  Then we colored and stamped to get a really diffused image without any definition.  After letting the paper dry for a minute or two, we inked the stamp again with the markers and stamped again right over the first image.  This adds the crisp image lines over the top of the soft color wash.

Finally, we added a piece of the Greenhouse Gala Designer Series Paper, tied a knot with the Basic Black 1/8″ Taffeta Ribbon and touched a few places with the Moonlight Smooch Accent Ink.

If you haven’t seen the Smooch Accent Ink in person, you’re going to want to check it out!  Moonlight is a soft vanilla iridescent that’s fairly opaque.  The Top Coat in the catalog is a translucent iridescent that doesn’t cover up any of your color but rather just adds shine.

Conquering Concord Crush

Honestly, the first time I saw this super-intense new purple, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it.

But I knew I’d want to be using the new In Color Concord Crush, so I pulled it out and tried matching it up with other colors.  Actually, I should have just pulled out my new Color Coach first!

The Color Coach is something to add to the first round of your New Catalog Wish List.  You’re going to love it! But since I didn’t have mine handy, I pulled out my #1 favorite new color: Daffodil Delight.

Seriously, I think Daffodil Delight is magic.  It’s actually made up of little chameleon-fairies that subtly change color to match whatever you put next to them.  Because Daffodil Delight goes with EVERYTHING!

You might recognize the basic layout of this card from last week, although I turned it sideways and changed the colors from Pacific Point & Marina Mist to Concord Crush & Daffodil Delight.

To color the flower, I stamped in Staz-On Jet Black ink, then used an AquaPainter with a drop of Concord Crush ink to brush on layers of the deep purple.  (check out another Watercolor Technique that I shared recently)

For the leaves I just used my Pear Pizazz Stampin’ Write Marker to color directly on the Confetti White card stock.  Since this green is more subtle than the Concord, it matched better to get the full-strength color from the marker.
